This is an original mammoth plate photograph by D.S. Cole of the Hot Springs, South Dakota Gun Club, members dating to circa 1897-1910. David Smith Cole (1843-1916) a Civil War veteran who enlisted in the Union in 1861 and was a Civil War Prisoner in Andersonville from 1864 to 1865. In 1865, D.S. Cole established the first Photography Studio in Washington, Iowa. As well as being a photographer, he was listed in U.S. Census as a blacksmith, gunsmith and photographer. Cole took the famous image sold by Cowan’s in 2015, which is titled the Chiefs of the Sioux Indians showing Little Boys, Barearm Necklaces, Jumping Chaser or Kicking Bear, Young Sitting Bull, Bear Paint Himself, White buffalo, or Sitting Bull Jr., White Bull, Young Eagle Bear. This image shows nearly two dozen men and young men with thirteen of the men holding Winchester Model 1897 slide-action shotguns, likely from a new shipment. The men show classic late 19th century cowboy regalia and are sitting in front of a large butte cliff. This is a large, silver gelatin, mammoth plate photograph. The back is marked D.S.
