This is an original photograph of Pawnee Bill in his traditional Wild West show clothing with rattlesnake cowboy hat from Gessford circa 1910. This image was taken at the same time, in the same studio as the famous image by Gessford showing Buffalo Bill, Pawnee Bill and Buffalo Jones. This appears to be a silver gelatin photograph and shows Pawnee Bill with arms crossed wearing his iconic beaded scout jacket and beaded gauntlet gloves with the outrageous rattlesnake skin cowboy hat. Gordon William Lillie (1860-1942) known as Pawnee Bill was an American showman and performer who specialized in Wild West shows and was best known for his partnership with William “Buffalo” Bill Cody. The bottom of the image is blind stamped Gessford 373 Fifth Avenue N.Y. and on the back printed “THIS PRINT IS MADE FOR PUBLICATION PLEASE CREDIT ‘PHOTO BY GESSFORD’”. Rarely seen image from an iconic photo shoot. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The image measures 7 1/8” BY 4.5”. Good overall condition, begin well kept with a clear wonderful image, one small blemish bottom right corner.
