Featured in this lot is this solid copper U.S. 7th Cavalry insignia signage circa 1917. This solid copper sign was hung over the Army Barracks at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. Camp Custer was built in 19017 for military training during World War I. Named after Civil War Cavalry officer General George Armstrong Custer, the facility trained or demobilized more than 100,000 troops during WWI. On August 17, 1940, Camp Custer was designated Fort Custer and became a permanent military training base. Fort Custer's facilities are currently used by the Michigan National Guard and other branches of the armed forces, primarily from Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. This sign has the crossed sabers, which are the emblem of the 7th Cavalry, emblazoned on its center. This embellishment is appropriate since Custer was part of the 7th Cavalry when he met his end at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The condition of this 7th cavalry sign is preserved with a break in the border above the cross sabers and shows a patina adorning the copper but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of this copper sign is 12 1/4" x 14 1/4" x 1 1/2". The collective weight of this sign is 2lb.
