Included in this lot are two (2) Polychrome Jars, Attributed to the Jemez Pueblo, circa 1930-1950. One jar is signed MM Toya, the other is unsigned. The Jemez Pueblo is located in Central-Northern New Mexico. The pottery produced there is known for its distinctive earth-tone colors blending stone polished and matte finishes with painted and etched designs. Jemez pottery is known for it's red & buff colors with a combination of matte & stone polished finishes. Pottery styles are influenced by their neighbor the Zia Pueblo since for a time there was no pottery made in Jemez, but purchased from Zia instead. Pottery such as bowls, seed pots sgraffito vessels (elaborately polished and engraved), wedding vases, figurines, holiday ornaments, and famous storytellers are now in collections throughout the world. Jemez Pueblo is the northernmost of three major Pueblos along the Jemez River, a tributary of the Rio Grande. These two polychrome jars are in very nice condition, with minimal pigment fading and edge scrapes. Largest jar measures 2.75"H x 3.75"W, smallest is 2.75"H x 3.5"W
