The lot features a collection of Fort Berthold Gros Ventre beaded miniature trade post items from the ex-C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt / O’Dell collections. In total the collection includes five miniature beaded trading post souvenirs handmade by the Gros Ventre and collected at Fort Berthold area by John Kleinschmidt circa 1930-1950’s. The set shows the following: Gros Ventre beaded necklace showing loom beading on thread showing an Indian tanned turtle umbilical cord fetish with Indian tanned beaded moccasins hanging below; next show to Chief feathered headdress and dance regalia fully beaded human figures with a dimensional pattern, one as a necklace pendant or fob and the other a pin / brooch on Indian tanned hide with small claws attached as the moccasins; next is a beaded cowboy hat on Indian tanned hide being sinew and thread sewn; lastly is a loom beaded Indian warrior or dancer that is thread sewn and of all the pieces is likely later, more 1950-1960’s. The moccasin turtle necklace, chiefs (2) and cowboy hat are all beaded with old glass trade seed beads in various colors of including greasy yellow, light blue, amber, corn yellow, black, greasy green, dark green, chalk white, amongst others. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection and O’Dell collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Catherine A. O'Dell. Attached is a museum tag that each read, "1396-87 O'Dell". Necklace measures 19.75-inches from the back of the neck to bottom of the moccasins, turtle by itself is 2-inches long and the moccasins are 1 5/8-inches long; necklace strand is approx.. 32-inches in circumference. Larger chief is 3-inches long by 1.5-inches wide. Smaller chief is 2.5-inches long by 1.25-inches wide. Beaded cowboy hat is 2-inches by 1.25-inches. Loom beaded dancer is 5.5-inches long by about 2-inches wide. These were on display at the C.M. Russell museum. A copy of the C.M. Russell Museum paperwork can be available at request.
