This is a fantastic and large finely woven circa 1950’s Navajo Yei-be-chai / Yeibechai wool rug. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a beautifully decorated design with 7 figurals against a Cheyenne pink colour background with great colouration and a black border that shows tan tassels and the weave and weft shows a finely woven design that shows a stepped field of white and light blue with each of the figural kilts showing different designs of black, white, forest green, Cheyenne pink, light blue, turquoise blue, pink, light and dark brown, and red colourations. Yeibichai rugs are a highly specialized category of pictorial Navajo textiles that portray human dancers participating in the sacred Nightway healing ceremony (also known as the Night Chant). Unlike standard geometric patterns, these textiles capture the spiritual movement, ceremonial attire, and cultural lineage of the Diné (Navajo). human dancers who impersonate the deities during multi-day autumn rituals. These figures are depicted in profile (sideways-facing), with bent knees or one foot raised to capture the synchronized motion of the dance. This Navajo rug is in very nice condition overall, loose border thread noted in a few areas, fade/stain spot noted. Thread count is 176 per square inch. Measures 31.5"W x 55"L, weight is 2lb, 14oz.
