Featured in this lot is this Northwest Coast Haida Taanu and Yáahl bentwood box. The storage box features a carved cedar construction that shows inlaid abalone into the lid and to the totem aspects on the sides of the storage box with the two main side walling shows the bear or Taanu totem decoration and on the other side the raven or Yáahl totem decoration, The very top of the bentwood box is decorated with a singular oval bone fragment and is inlaid into the geometric pattern. The word for "bear" is often translated as "Taanu" or "Taan" (sometimes spelled slightly differently depending on the dialect). The bear holds a significant place in Haida culture and symbolism, representing strength, motherhood, and protection. Bears are honored for their powerful connection to the land and are sometimes regarded as "Elder Kinsmen" due to their respected place within the animal kingdom in Haida beliefs. Similarly, the raven, or Yáahl, is also a central figure, known as a creator and trickster with special powers. The condition of this Haida bentwood box is good and well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a good well preserved overall condition for its age. The bentwood box features measurements of 11 5/8" x 10 1/2" x 6 5/8". The collective weight of this 5lb 4oz. (The lid uniquely is shaped and carved from a singular piece of wood).
