Featured in this lot is a trapper leather studded chest, circa late 18th century to 19th century. The chest features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wooden, leather wrapped, and brass tack studded construction that shows a brass swivel handle on the top. The interior features a large main compartment with smaller compartments in the sides and the whole interior is lined with newspaper clippings. Chests such as these would be used to store tradable goods such as jewelry, fabric, beads, and like items for barter with Native People and frontiersmen throughout their travels. The lid is domed and compact enough to pack in a saddle bag of stuffed in their gear. The condition is well preserved for its age with some wear marks and holes in the leather wrapped outer layer with the locking clasp seemingly broken and a patina adorning the brass tacks and handle of the chest. The measurements of this chest are 5" x 11 3/4" x 6 3/4". The collective weight of this chest is 2 lbs 6oz.*
