Featured in this lot is this carved wood Laughing Buddha sculpture from the 20th century. The Laughing Buddha, also known as Budai or Hotei, is a figure rooted in Chinese folklore, not the historical Gautama Buddha. He's based on a 10th-century Zen monk known for his jovial nature and carrying a cloth sack. Wood carvings of the Laughing Buddha, often depicting him with a large belly and a happy expression, are popular as symbols of good luck, prosperity, and contentment. This sculpture shows the Laughing Buddha carrying his iconic large bag over his shoulder as he skips along his journey. He is smiling and show cases a large belly. He has white teeth and white eyes, with his right eye missing. Overall the sculpture shows good condition, with some wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 3" L x 4 3/8" W x 8 1/4" H and weighs 14 ounces.
