Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Cassilly Adams (1843-1921) was a descendant of the American founding father, John Adams and studied at the Boston Academy of Arts with Thomas Noble and later at the Cincinnati Art School. Cassilly created historical-west, Indian portraits and genre scenes that captured the spirit of life on the American western frontier. He is best remembered for his epic work, "Custer's Last Fight", 9 and 1/2 feet by 16 feet, 5 inches, which took him a year to create, completing it in 1885. The copyright to this particular painting was obtained by the Anheuser- Busch Brewing Company, which made and circulated thousands of reproductions. The painting was considered a vital document of American history and was exhibited across the country. Following that success, Adams concentrated on depicting the American West and gained prominence for his compelling portrayals of the Cheyenne, Sioux and Plains Indians. His work is in important collections throughout the United States, including the Amon Carter Museum in Texas, the Joslyn Art Museum in Nebraska, the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, the Arizona Historical Society, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming. The drawing displays a Native Plains Indian male dressed in a collared buttoned shirt, trade blanket draped over his left shoulder, wearing a hairband with three feathers protruding upwards. The drawing is in amazingly well preserved condition. Gold gilt matted wood frame is in good overall condition, slight scuffing exhibited on edges. Visible art measures 3.25"W x 4.75"L, frame is 11.875"W x 13.125"L x 1.25"D. Weight is 1lb, 14oz.
