Featured in this lot is an Original Signed Cassilly Adams Drawing, "Tecumseh", circa late 19th century. Provenance: From the Thomas Adams Estate; ex-Woodrow Wilson Fine Arts, Inc collection.; ex-Questroyal Fine Art, LLC. collection; ex-Kodner Gallery Fine Art collection. Also included is a poster of "Custer's Last Fight". Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Cassilly Adams (1843-1921) was a descendant of the American founding father, John Adams and studied at the Boston Academy of Arts with Thomas Noble and later at the Cincinnati Art School. Cassilly created historical-west, Indian portraits and genre scenes that captured the spirit of life on the American western frontier. He is best remembered for his epic work, "Custer's Last Fight", 9 and 1/2 feet by 16 feet, 5 inches, which took him a year to create, completing it in 1885. The copyright to this particular painting was obtained by the Anheuser- Busch Brewing Company, which made and circulated thousands of reproductions. The painting was considered a vital document of American history and was exhibited across the country. Following that success, Adams concentrated on depicting the Amercian West and gained prominence for his compelling portrayals of the Cheyenne, Sioux and Plains Indians. Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief and warrior who promoted resistance to the expansion of the United States onto Native American lands. A persuasive orator, Tecumseh traveled widely, forming a Native American confederacy and promoting intertribal unity. Tecumseh was widely admired in his lifetime, even by Americans who had fought against him. His primary American foe, William Henry Harrison, described Tecumseh as "one of those uncommon geniuses, which spring up occasionally to produce revolutions and overturn the established order of things." Adams work is in important collections throughout the United States, including the Amon Carter Museum in Texas, the Joslyn Art Museum in Nebraska, the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, the Arizona Historical Society, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming. The drawing displays Tecumseh dressed in a fringed buckskin shirt wearing a fur hat. The drawing is in amazingly well preserved condition. Gold gilt matted wood frame is in good overall condition, slight scuffing exhibited on edges. Visible art measures 3.5"W x 5.25"L, frame is 11.875"W x 13.125"L x 1.25"D. Weight is 1lb, 14oz.
