The lot features a steatite carved stone bear effigy elbow pipe bowl from the Cherokee Native American Indians from the Black Mountain region of North Carolina dating to circa 1800-1850 A.D. The grey steatite bowl has a nice elbow pattern with bear animal effigy on top. Black Bears are considered respected spiritual creates to the Cherokee and appear on early pipe examples such as this. Close examination show no modern tool marks on the pipe, insert hole or smoke chamber, indicating the pipe and holes are hand-carved and pithed, an attributed to its early authentic age. The pipe has a nice original patina and is in well preserved very good condition with authentic historic-period examples such as this being scarce and many not surviving early collecting practices. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton of London, England; noted as being purchased by Eaton in is log book from a dealer at the Santa Fe Whitehawk Show in 2002 for $1,200. Measures overall 3.5”L by 2”H by ¾” thick.
