The lot features a hide beaded bow and arrow quiver with bow and arrows attributed to the Cheyenne Native American Indians of the 19th Century. The complete set includes the quiver, bow and two arrows. The bow case and arrow quiver shows Indian brain-tanned and smoked hide showing traditional geometric beaded sections which wrap around both openings and ends. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beads in colors of chalk white an greasy blue or cobalt. Both the bow and arrow quiver bag openings or tops shows a hide buckskin lacing sewn red stroud old trade cloth and the bag overall shows long hand-cut hide frilly fringe throughout, giving it a truly artful appearance. The top of the bag still has the semi-wide shoulder strap and the bag appears to be predominantly if not all sinew sewn. Next shows an old one piece solid wood carved bow with appropriately carve notched ends and center section shows a dark almost burnished red shiny coloring and the gripping area is wrapped in red stroud trade cloth, trade clothe and a muslin canvas like material secured with hoof hide glue along with the hide parfleche lacing which wraps around spirally and is secured with a brass trade tack. The bow shows the correct twist braided sinew parfleche string tied on and still attached / complete. The bow itself has a darker mellow coloring. The set also includes two arrows which shows metal tips secured with sinew wrappings on a wood shaft with turkey feather fletching secured with sinew and hide glue, showing nice carved notches and remnants of ocher mineral pigment coloring. The quiver has a rich, old musty smoked brain-tanned hide smell and the hide is in good supple condition, overall all being in good condition. Provenance: From a large collection of Sioux and Cheyenne materials in Wyoming and from the ex-collection of Dale Harrison of Cincinnati, Ohio. The piece is said to date to circa 1875 by the current collector. The bow is 49”L the arrows are 24.5”L and 22”L with tips that are 1.5”L and 2 5/8”L respectively. The bow and arrow quiver measures 62” wide including the bow in the case and side fringe by 52” L when hung from the shoulder strap.
