The lot features a percussion exposed side hammer smooth bore rifle which is marked c. 1883 and is beautifully adorned with brass trade tack patterns and poured bullet led attributed to being owned by Cheyenne Native American Indian Lilly Dog. Provenance: The piece was acquired by Jim Aplan of Piedmont, South Dakota in the 1970’s from the family of the previous owner and later sold to noted collected Cyrus Eaton of London, England. Lilly Dog was a documented Cheyenne Indian who worked for the U.S. Indian Services as a tracker later in life. The long gun itself shows very large smooth bore with percussion cap and ball exposed side hammer receiver plate which still appears to function. The receiver plate shows a very faint touchmark and at the point of the barrel securing to the stock is an 1883 inside an oval stamped. The trigger guard is large with a sling loop and shows gripping grooves just below the guard where the user’s hand would rest. The back shows the original metal butte plate, and the front shows the barrel band. The entire nice dark honest patina’d wood stock is covered in brass covered metal and solid brass trade tacks along with three overlays of poured bullet led circles. The brass tacks appear to have nice mellowing and patina and are accenting the gun in various patterns, which likely having meaning pertaining to the previous owner’s family tribe affiliations and history. Provenance: Ex-Jim Aplan / Cyrus Eaton collections. Antique black powder firearm does NOT require an FFL or background check for transfer. Overall measures 39 3/8” long.
