The lot features a wonderful, beaded men’s war shirts attributed to the Northern Cheyenne Indians of Colorado with a fantastic from the ex-Ben Thompson, Central States Archaeological Society. The shirt is comprised of Indian brain-tanned hide with fringe cut edges and is adorned with beaded panels running across the chest, shoulders and onto the back in classic war shirt pattern. The beadwork also goes down the arms and the front, back and arms are bordered with approx.. 105 strips of old black horse tail hair trimmed in old red stroud trade clothe. The front and rear show a classic war shirt feature, Indian hide bibs with beautiful beadwork, fringed border and red ocher dyed background. The beaded panels and border of the bibs show early pony glass trade beads and the center of the bib shows old glass trade seed beads. Pony beads are light blue, chalk white and black. The bib shows the same light blue and chalk white pony beads with old glass trade seed beads in chalk white, black, greasy yellow, Cheyenne pink and red. The shirt overall shows a painted blue top and painted yellow / green bottom which both appear to be a powder paint / pigment being ocher. The front and back show a bowtie hourglass symbol on one side of the bib and a pipe and stem design on the other side of the bib. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Ben Thompson, former president of the Central States Archaeological Society. The shirt has some loss to the coloring and the color rubs off when touched. Measures overall 30-inches long and 24-inches wide across the shoulders. Age unknown.
