The lot features a beautiful split horn buffalo war bonnet headdress attributed to the Cheyenne Native American Indians from the Mike Kokin Sherwood’s Spirit of America Gallery Santa Fe, NM and Ted Levy collections. The headdress is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo / bison hide cap and trailer with two polished split horns, old trade beads, strips of old trade clothe, old brass hawk bells, a large beautiful beaded brow band strip in typical Cheyenne colors. The beadwork si all glass trade seed beads with colors of red white heart, chalk white, sky padre light blue and cobalt. There are long strips of old grey horsetail hair. The long trailer is 33 inches long and has notch-cut edges and tapers to a point. There are old faded painted symbols still visible along with old hawk bells tied on the back with strips of hide as well. It was typical of Native American Warriors to tie bells to their warrior kit and headdresses as they liked the sound of the bells when on horseback at full trot into coup, hunting and battle. The war bonnet has the original beaded tie straps still attached to the top. Provenance: From the ex-Ted Levy collection Santa Rose, California who acquired the piece from Mike Kokin at Sherwood’s Spirit of America Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico back in the 1990’s. Truly a rare full size example in well kept and artist presence.
