This is a beautiful long Indian hide pipe bag or tobacco bag from the Cheyenne for use by a woman and dating to the early-to-mid 20th century. The bag comes with a handwritten note which states, “Cheyenne Pipe Bag Ca. 1900 Long, narrow buckskin woman’s pipe bag with geometric design and long fringe 29” x 3” Blue, White and Yellow Item 614 – March 18, 1989 Auction.” The bag is comprised of Indian tanned buckskin hide with slender, long body having yellow and red ocher / ochre mineral pigment paint and glass trades seed beadwork at the opening and along the bottom front section. The bottom shows thing frilly Indian hide long fringes with a nice red ocher coloring. The bag is thread sewn and shows seed bead colors of greasy yellow, chalk white, faceted brass metal, and light blue. The bag dates to early-to-mid 1900’s and is well kept with little to no bead loss. Total length 29-inches long by 3.25-inches wide.
