Featured in this lot is this Chinese Famille Rose Gilt Porcelain Snuff Bottle, circa late 19th Century. Decorated in polychrome enamels, gold gilt, and iron-red with two male figures talking on one side and two female figures standing across from each other on the opposite side. Famille rose (French for "pink family") is a type of Chinese porcelain introduced in the 18th century and defined by pink overglaze enamel. It is a Western classification for Qing dynasty porcelain known in Chinese by various terms: fencai, ruancai, yangcai, and falangcai. Famille rose was popular in the 18th and 19th century, and it continued to be made in the 20th century. Large quantities of famille rose porcelain were exported to Europe, United States and other countries, and many of these export wares were Jingdezhen porcelain decorated in Canton, and are known as "Canton famille rose". The markings on the bottom read "Qian Long Nian Zhi" (Made During Reign of Qian Long) in zhuanshu script. This style of mark was particularly favoured in the Qianlong period. Chinese artisans copied reign marks from earlier dynasties out of a respect and reverence for these earlier periods. These marks are often referred to in auction catalogue descriptions as ‘apocryphal’ marks. This Famille Rose Gilt Porcelain Snuff bottle is in good overall condition, gold gilt is bright, colours are clear and soft, slight scuffing observed on bottom edge. Measures 2.75"H x 1.75"W
