This is an exceptional authentic circa 1800’s ball head war club from the Chippewa Native American Indians. The piece shows an effigy carved alligator or reptile along the back of the root ball head running down the beginning of the handle. The handle shows a three-sided tapering and curved design which is artfully accented by the hot file burned pattern which is executed in a very precise and parallel manner. The haft shows a nice shiny finish with rich deep patina from honest authentic age and use. The gripping area has a single stepped pommel end which shows a rounded pierced hole which would have held a drop of feathers, beadwork drop or Indian tanned hide wrist throng. At the pierce hole is an old original museum collections tag which has a yellowed / brown aged appearance and is handwritten “Chippewa Effigy War Club”. The head shows a spherical root ball which was expertly shaped and adorned with a combination of rich pigment mineral black paint and burnishing along with a scraped finish. The dark head shows signs of honest authentic age and use and displays very well. This style of effigy carved ball head war club from the Indian Wars era is truly a scarce piece in rare well-preserved form. Provenance: From a very prominent American Indian collection in Billings, Montana and has been authenticated as being a circa 19th Century piece. The piece measures 20" long with the head measuring 12" in circumference from front to back and approximately 4" in diameter.
