This is a fine, authentic 19th-century Sioux Ghost Dance Shield from the ex-Joseph Moore collection Savannah, Georgia, a private collection from Paris, France and accompanied with a 1987 provenance document. The circa 1890’s Ghost Dance shield exhibits a stripped / carved wood branch bent wood hoop frame with stretched rawhide parfleche held into place with rawhide lacing and shows Indian hide ties attached. The front shows the parfleche rawhide of buffalo / bison hide with a painted large black waterbird flying up towards the sky with wings spread at the center. The top shows six holes which would have held a drop of feathers or something similar. There is a unique bone handle strung on Indian hide along the back, a very unique and unusual original attribution. The shield shows nice wear and patina. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Joseph Moore Savannah, George; private collection of fine Native American antiques from Paris, France, accompanied by a February 3, 1987 Crown & Eagle Antiques, Inc New Hope, PA Insurance Appraisal and Identification signed copy of a document from Lynn D.
