Silver cutlery handled clip-point Bowie knife, circa 1840-1865. This finely made belt knife features a double guard of nickel silver and an approximately 6” blade. The ornate silver handle is typical of Civil War era and earlier belt knives whose main use was self-protection. Hunting and utility knives of the time usually have a single guard while fighting knives almost always have double guards to protect the user’s hand from both slippage and the slash of an assailant’s blade. This type of silver handle added a conspicuously fashionable touch when worn in the belt and many can be seen in old photos of Civil War soldiers, frontiersmen and gamblers. The blade on this example has aged dark and shows no wear from sharpening. Likewise, the handle shows no dents or abuse which is often found on similar knives from this turbulent time period in American history. As many collectors appreciate these days, the blade in unmarked. It is not uncommon to find examples with spurious markings not contemporary to the knife’s period of manufacture. Almost all fake antique Bowie knives have such markings to enhance their value. Attesting to excellent craftsmanship, the fit of handle, hilt and blade is solid with no play or looseness. This would make a most handsome addition to any Civil War, Fighting Knife or Old West collection.
