This lot includes a Colt Cloverleaf House pistol, chambered for .41 rim-fire. The small four shot revolver was manufactured as the House Model between 1871 - 1874, while the Cloverleaf Model was manufactured between 1874-1876. The House Model was also nicknamed in more modern times, the "House Cloverleaf", because of its four-shot cylinder, with deep flutes. The Colt House is built on a brass frame, and finished with either blue or nickel finish - this example utilizing the later. The revolver also features a 3" barrel, hidden spur trigger, and walnut birds-head grips. The revolver is correctly marked, reading "COLT'S HOUSE PISTOL - HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." on top of the barrel, "PAT. SEP. 19.1871." on top of the frame, and showing matching serial numbers on the butt of the grip, and on the bottom of the barrel. The Colt House were the first Colt revolver design specifiaccly for metallic cartridges, making them a quintessential addition to any Colt collection. Additionally, the Cloverleaf was the first incorporation of the countersunk or recessed cylinder breech. This small recess where shells were loaded allowed the rim of the cartridges to sit flush with the surface of the cylinder. Much like the cylinder pin, this innovation was also promptly shelved by Colt and not to be seen again until the following century when it was marketed as the ‰ÛÏembedded head cylinder.‰Û Smith & Wesson wouldn‰Ûªt use this feature until the advent of their .357 magnum in 1935. Overall, the pistol shows good mechanical and aesthetic condition - showing excellent grips, and typical wear to the nickel finish. The action remains tight, and in good time, with a strong cylinder lock-up. The barrel does show pitting. The pistol, manufactured 1871-1874 qualifies as an Antique Handgun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 5296.
