The lot features an increasingly rare original J & E Stevens Company Cromwell, Connecticut Eagle and Eaglets cast iron bank dating to circa 1883. Stevens originally marketed this classic, patriotically-themed bank as ‰ÛÏThe American Eagle Bank‰Û. The piece depicts a mother deeding her two young, defenseless Eagle chicks. Place a coin in the Eagle‰Ûªs beak, depress the lever and she leans forward, spreading her wings, and appears to feed her Eaglets the coin as it drops into the bank. The bottom of the piece is marked, ‰ÛÏPAT JAN 23 1883.‰Û The cast iron bank is in good solid overall condition. These authentic original examples are becoming scarcer with some examples of this same bank selling for as high as $5,500 at live auction. The lever appears to have been replaced as shown. The piece measures 4" x 8" and is 6" tall.
