Featured in this lot is a Colt Model 1849 single action pocket revolver chambered in .31 caliber. This is a fine, original example .31 caliber, five-shot revolver that found favor with officers and enlisted men as personal weapons during the Indian Wars of the period. Many of these also saw service in the gold fields of California, the settling of the West, and in about all urban areas during this very turbulent time of Post-Civil War Reconstruction. The 1849 was one of Colt’s most popular designs that was large enough for aimed fire, but small enough to conceal in a waste band or unobtrusive holster. They also found favor with gamblers and “ladies of the evening.” The barrel is correctly marked “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA”, along with “COLT’S PATENT” on the left side of the frame and “31 CAL.” on the side of the trigger guard. The revolver features nice, overall aged patina metal. The fine walnut grips show good condition overall, with some damage on the right grip. This example also shows a mellow, uncleaned brass back strap and trigger guard. This revolver, with very attractive overall appearance, has sharp markings, fine screws, and original loading lever. This is one of the most popular and successful of the Colt percussion revolvers and a key model for any Colt or Old West collection. Serial Number: 29779. This firearm qualifies as an Antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
