For sale in this lot is a fine example of a Colt New Service revolver, chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge. The revolver's original shipping date is circa February, 1927, and is accompanied by a factory Colt letter confirming that date. The New Service was Colt's first true "big-bore" revolver, designed with the swing-out cylinder, and chambered for some of the largest rounds of its time, including; .38-40, .44-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .45 Colt, .455 Webley, .450 Boxer, .476 Enfield, and later the .357 Magnum. The revolver lived a long manufacture-life, produced between 1896 to 1946, and utilized by not only the United States Armed Forces, but with the United Kingdom, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The revolver is marked with the correct period roll-stampings, reading; "NEW SERVICE 45 COLT" on the left side of the barrel, "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A. - PAT'D AUG 5, 1884 JUNE 5, 1900 JULY 4, 1905" on the top of the barrel, and matching serial numbers on the frame, swing-out cylinder, and on the factory letter. This example is a 7 1/2" barrel variant, and has a deep blue'd finish, colt factory rubber grips, and a factory butt lanyard-loop. Overall, the revolver shows very-good collectors condition, boasting 90% finish retention, a fantastic bore, exceptional action, with excellent timing, and a very-solid cylinder lock up.
