Provided for auction in this lot is an early Colt Single Action Army Frontier revolver, chambered for the .44-40 caliber. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt Factory letter dating the shipment of the firearm to August 1st, 1884, to Schoverling, Daly & Gales in New York, New York. The Colt Single Action Army, nicknamed "The Peacemaker" shares the title with the Winchester 1873 as the "Gun That Won the West", and was a sought after peace for Military personnel from the American Indian Wars, all the way to limited use in the Second Great War. Additionally, the SAA was a hot sidearm for police, gangsters, and cowboys alike - The Frontier Model was used by the two mounted "cowboys" at the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The SAA Frontier Model was so successful in its time due to the fact that you could carry one type of ammunition caliber for both your rifle, and handgun. Frontier cartridges of the time consisted of the .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20 (.32 WCF) - Essentially any round compatible with both repeating action rifles, and handguns. This example utilizes a 7 1/2" barrel, blue'd finish, and bone grips. The revolver is marked with correct period marking, with the pre-1889 acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" on the left side of the barrel, "COLT PT. F. A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." on the top of the barrel, "PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871 - JULY. 2. -72. - JAN. 19. -75." on the right side of the frame, "44 CF" on the left side of the trigger guard, and showing matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger assembly, and butt of the grip. All of the serial numbers match that which is provided on the factory letter. Overall, the revolver shows very -good condition for age, The finish has worn naturally, and is absent of major pitting, or rust. As well, the bone grips show good condition. The mechanics of the revolver also show good condition, with a tight action, which is in good time, and has strong cylinder lock-up. Once again, the revolver originates from 1884, qualifying it as an Antique Handgun, NOT requiring FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 98429.
