This is a Colt Single Action Army, Frontier Six Shooter, chambered for the famed .44-40 caliber. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt Factory letter from historian M.S. Huber dating the revolver to February 5th, 1898, and shipped to the Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company. The Colt Frontier line was so apply named for its use of Frontier cartridges - Users of the .44-40 Winchester in the far West appreciated the convenience of being able to carry a single caliber of ammunition, which could be fired through their rifle as well as their revolvers. For example, the two mounted "Cowboys" at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral were armed with this rifle and pistol combination. In addition to the Colt Factory letter, the revolver includes a hand written letter, addressed to one of the firearms owners, and dated to June 10th, 1987. The letter states that the revolver once belonged to a man in Merced, California, who had the revolver in the family collection for "well over 50 years". This example shows period correct roll stamping, reading; "COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" on the left side of the barrel, "PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871. - JULY 2. 72. JAN. 19. 75." on the left side of the frame, and "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." on the top of the barrel. The revolver is finished with matching serial numbers on the butt of the grip, on the trigger assembly, and on the frame. The serial numbers match that of the Factory letter as well as the hand written letter. Overall, the revolver shows good aesthetic, and mechanical condition. The piece shows a naturally aged patina, absent of any major pitting, and showing good remnants of the original blue. As well, the rampant colt grips show excellent condition. The revolver has a tight action, which shows good timing, and a strong cylinder lock-up. The revolver is dated to 1898, qualifying it as an Antique Handgun, which does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 172113.
