The lot features an excellent polychrome painted and beaded parfleche sheath from the Crow Native American Indian people and dating to circa 19th Century. The piece shows a Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide parfleche rawhide being constructed with sinew sewing and adorned with trade clothe and traditional geometric period correct beadwork. The entire surface shows exceptional polychrome pigment mineral paint in a fantastic traditional geometric design in red, green, and yellow. The sheath is in a very unusual large size, a truly exciting attribute. The case, sheath or scabbard is trimmed with a dark trade clothe wool being fancy beaded with chalk white glass trade seed beads. The entire outer edge of the sheath shows a fine geometric beaded strip in sky padre blue, Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, red white hearts and dark blue. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. A few excellent examples of Parfleche Sheaths have sold at public auction such as the Crow Sheath that sold at the August in Santa Fe High Noon & Manitou Galleries 8/11/2005 sale for $3,042, the Crow Beaded Parfleche sheath that sold for $4,000 at Cowan’s 2012 sale and the Crow Sheath sold by Cowan’s at their 2014 sale for $3,500 with the example being sold in this lot being of a much more attractive and large size. Measures overall 14.5 inches in length by 4.5 inches wide.
