The lot features a wonderful authentic 19th Century stone head war club originating from the Comanche Native American Indian people. The war club shows a carve stone head with solid wood haft being covered in Indian tanned hide, beadwork and both braided and hitched horsehair (horse hair). The head shows a red / brown stone material with typical double rounded design with one side having a chip from use. The head is secured to the haft with a wrap of Indian tanned hide along with a parfleche rawhide structure. The head shows a fine scalloped design with glass trade seed beaded accents in greasy yellow black and padre sky blue. The haft has been completely covered in alternating white and black braided horsehair that is adorned with ocher mineral pigment painted blue and yellow horsehair. The top and bottom of the haft show a fine section of expertly crafted hand hitched horse hair in black, white, and red, a truly exceptional artistic addition. The war club tomahawk shows a large drop of horsehair at the end. The piece dates to the late 19th Century and is truly a wonderful addition to any collection with its fine craftsmanship and wonderful provenance. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures overall 31 inches overall in length with drop with the head being 5.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches thick.
