The lot features Custer’s Appomattox Campaign silk flag section, which was handmade by Elizabeth Custer, along with an Elizabeth Custer signature and book on the full flag. This exact collection was sold by Shobe Auction in 2012 for $3,068 (w/ bp), a copy of the listing is included. The flag was handmade by Elizabeth Custer and delivered to her husband, George Armstrong Custer, on the battlefield in the midst of the battle at Dinwiddie Court House, March 31, 1865. On April 1st, 1865 the very next day at the Five Forks Battle, the flag bearer holding this flag was mortally wounded, along with the lower half of the Guidon being shot out with Elizabeth Custer’s initials. A photograph of the full flag is shown for reference, and hence the loose shards that have fallen off the flag in storage. The “General George A. Custer's Personal Battle Flag” was sold in 2007 by Heritage Auction for $1,041,250 (w/ bp), this section being sold in this lot came from the original and includes the hand-written notes by Elizabeth Custer. The notes state: “Surrender Appomattox Court House”; signed “Mrs. Custer”; address “71 East 87 St. New York”; on the back side (several notes which was documented by Shobe Auction as “several notes as Mrs. Custer in her research was known to do.”) “Did A. capture the first flag in the Civil War? (A. being Autie, her nickname for Custer) and is dated 1925. The letter is also marked “(a) He received the last flag – the flag of tuve. Did he capture the first flag from confederates. Major Lyon on the Surrender. 1925 Be sure if A capture the first flag.” Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842-1933) was an American author and public speaker, and the wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, United States Army. Also included is a leather bound copy of the “General George A. Custer's Personal Battle Flag” story with documented provenance and images as well as a print out of the listing. The listing shows the flag section, also referred to as shard, which is in a black frame with print-off of the full flag, Elizabeth Custer 1925 signed letter where the section was found, referencing the flag, print out of the Shobe auction listing, leather bound book of the full flag history and print out of the Heritage auction listing. Frame measures 11.75” x 9.25”, letter is 8 7/8” x 4”, flag bound book measures 11.25” x 8.75”, flag section approximately 2.75” + length. A truly historic, and rare piece of American and Western History.*
