Dave Powell (born 1954) is a contemporary Western artist rooted deeply in Montana, with four generations of family heritage tied to the region’s rugged landscape and cowboy culture. The son of artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell, Dave inherited a rich artistic lineage. Primarily self-taught, Dave began serious art training in his mid-teens. He benefited from mentorship and collaboration with celebrated Western artists, including Bob Scriver, Ned Jacob, Robert Lougheed, and Joe Beeler, the founder of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). Dave Powell’s deep knowledge of historical Western clothing and gear led him to work with Paramount Pictures, where he pitched and advised on authentic movie costumes. Drawing on his expertise in cowboy and Native American attire, he helped ensure the wardrobe designs accurately reflected the period, adding realism and credibility to the studio’s Western productions.
