This is a wonderful, medium to large size polychrome painted and carved / incised pottery olla pot from David Chinana, a Pueblo of Jemez artist circa 1970-1980’s. The piece is signed on the bottom “CHINANA JEMEZ”. The pottery olla shows intricate fine detail showing polychrome (multiple-color) geometric designs with a carved or incised geometric design on the top of the pot. Donald Chinana was bord in 1963 and began making pottery since 1977. He specializes in stone polished black on red bowls, vases, wedding vases and is also experimenting with blackware. He digs his clay from the Jemez Reservation, uses natural slips, natural paints and fires his pottery outdoors. He was taught by his mother Anacita Chinana. Donald uses a polishing stone that was handed down from his grandmother." (C&D Gifts). Donald Chinana is cited in Southern Pueblo Pottery by Schaaf (page 82), Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery by Berger and Schiffer (2000 & 2004), among others. His work is found in many galleries and collections. The condition of this pottery vessel is is preserved with a slight chip or wear mark to the inside of the pot rim and some speckling and scratches to the polychrome dye but otherwise shows preserved condition. The measurements of this pottery vessel is 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" x 6 3/4". The collective weight of this pottery vessel is 2lb 4oz. Previously this piece was valued at $2,100.
