Included in this lot is a Rare First Edition of "Death of Billy the Kid" by John W. Poe, Houghton Mifflin Company 1933, and the museum display copy of the 1882 Santa Fe Daily newspaper article, "The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid, The Noted Desperado of the Southwest." Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. Many years after the death of Billy the Kid, Deputy John William Poe, who was just outside the door when Sheriff Pat Garrett killed him, wrote out the whole story, which was published in a small edition. Later, in 1933, this first-hand account was offered to a larger public with an excellent introduction by Lincoln County War expert Maurice Garland Fulton, who lived for years among the scenes of Billy the Kid's wild career. While certain statements made in the book by Poe are controversial, his account is a valuable document for anyone interested in Billy the Kid. After the incident with Billy the Kid, Poe was elected sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico. "The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid, The Noted Desperado of the Southwest" is a biography and partly first-hand account written by Pat Garrett, sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, in collaboration with a ghostwriter, Marshall Ashmun "Ash" Upson. The Tombstone Western Heritage Museum label is on the bottom left corner, "The Santa Fe Daily New Mexican Sept. 12, 1882", museum code is on the bottom right corner, "LO126." The newspaper article copy is in a clear protective sleeve. The tan coloured cloth bound hardcover is in very nice condition, tight spine, very slight scuffing observed on cover edges. Intact pages exhibit normal age tanning, foxing noted on top edge. Original illustrated paper dust jacket is in good overall condition, exhibits scuffing along edges, age tanning. Paper dust jacket is protected by form fitting clear mylar jacket in good condition. Measures 4.625"W x 7.5"L x .625"D, weight is 8oz.
