This is a very unique double hide wrapped polychrome painted rattle attributed to the Dogrib, also referred to as Tli?cho/Tlicho, a Dene First Nations people that are Athabaskan-speaking and from the Northwest Territories of Canada. The piece shows a bent wood eyeglass-like pattern with two hoops wrapped in wetted and stretched Indian tanned hide rattles, which are sinew sewn and covered in a pigment mineral paint pattern in rich colors of red, green, blue, and black. The top of the bent wood is burnt with a stamping of a Papal Cross or Patriarchal Cross, also known as the Cross of Larraine, showing a three bar cross with "X" below. Both sides are marked with a three to four band bulls-eye-like center with overlapping diagonal arrows with symbols of tipis, the sun, and an animal. This is truly a unique item showing good condition. Measures overall 7.5" W by 5.75" H by 7/8" D.
