For your consideration is an Early American 19th Century Goosewing Broad Axehead. Goosewing Broad Axes are named for their unique axehead; it resembles a goose in flight. The goosewing axe was brought to Pennsylvania by German settlers and were the earliest hewing axes used in this country. The hewing axe was already fully developed in Germany and was used to square up logs. By the 1830’s the more symmetrical broad axes replaced the goosewing axes. This is a right-handed axehead with a single bevel edge; a straight or knife edge axehead would be used for felling trees. This type of axehead would be stone sharpened not file sharpened, The blacksmith's mark is stamped on the beveled side. The axehead is overall good condition, with slight cracks noted along measures 13.25"L x 7.5"W
