Featured in this lot is a Early Vintage Bali Indonesian hand-carved Sawo wood Sculpture. It depicts a celebrated tale from the Hindu epic, Ramayana, a commonly found theme in Balinese woodworking. The sculpture depicts a pivotal portion of the great Hindu epic, "Hanuman and the Monkeys Battle Kumbhakarna". The Ramayana’s protagonist is Rama. His beloved wife has been kidnapped by Ravana. Rama and his monkey army retaliate, but the thousands of simians are no match for the ferocious Kumbhakarna. The carnage continues until Rama himself, employing his most mighty powers, is able to bring down the colossal beast. This wood sculpture was created 3-dimensional of one solid 9.25" diameter block of wood, additional figures are exhibited on the "reverse" side. Woodcarving has been a traditional art in Bali, Indonesia. Bali is known for master carvers and sculptors that create and produce intricately beautiful works of art made from durable wood. wood carving, which required more skills and is more refined than stone work, only started around 12th century. At that time, the style was a mix of Buddhist and Hindu influence. Traditionally, wood carvings are carved in honour of Hindu gods or for use in cremation ceremonies. Typically woods used include teak, chempaka and sandalwood with coarse grains. Each piece is unique and involves intricate carving on both sides of each block of wood. Much of this craftwork takes place in woodcarving's golden triangle, bounded by the villages of Mas, Ubud, and Gianyar. Fantastic intricate details, amazing craftsmanship, even the sides are carved, the masks and headgear details and the tree detail are incredible. Sculpture is in very good, vintage condition with slight chips. Measurements are approximately 24"H x 9.25"W x 5"D, weight approximate 17lb, 8oz
