The lot features a shoulder mounted Montana Mountain Goat stamped on the back three times by the maker, the Karstetter Bros. Whitefish, Montana, interestingly the Great Northern Railway Rocky Mountain Goat logo was derived from a goat mounted and sold by the Karstetter Brothers. The Karstetter Brothers, Sam Alton Karstetter (1878-1957), Cleveland “Cleve” Herbert Karstetter (1885-1960) and Sumner Musser Karstetter (1889-1949) came to Montana and opened a Taxidermy shop at 318 Second Street Whitefish, Montana on October 1st, 1912, a location formerly occupied by taxidermist Maddy. They moved to Central Ave in Whitefish in 1931. They were accomplished hunting and fishing guides with a national reputation among big gamer hunters. The original Rocky Mountain Goat adopted by the Great Northern Railway as a corporate trademark was mounted by the Karstetter Brothers and shipped back to New York City to a major railroad terminal. They also created the well-known fur-bearing fish, picture shown for example, one of which was presented to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a souvenir. This example shows a wood base with three of the original makers stamps marked, “KARSTETTER BROS TAXIDERMISTS TANNERS & FURRIERS WHITEFISH MONTANA”. Also marked # 964 Missoulla Mont. The mount shows the mountain goat with hair on, glass eyes, original horns. There is a slight off color from its very early age and some very slight loss, but mostly well kept with good fur. Measures overall 19.75-inches long by 17-inches deep by 11 3/8-inches wide.
