For your consideration is this early Navajo Native American J.B. Moore Crystal hand woven wool rug, circa 1915. In 1896, J.B. Moore, a U.S. Licensed Indian Trader, purchased an interest in a trading post in a remote part of the Navajo Reservation. He renamed the trading post Crystal after a sparkling mountain spring in the area. Moore was responsible for encouraging the Navajo weavers to upgrade the quality and quantity of their weavings by paying more for better workmanship. While on the reservation Moore published two catalogues of available rug patterns; these were published in 1903 and 1911. This rug, a plate XV variant from the 1911 catalogue. In this variant, stepped crosses are featured in two vertical rows on a cream colored field, four in each row. The crosses are outlined in brown and red. Additional design comes from pink and brown chevrons in a double row along the outside, as well as a single row up the center. While this rug is showing its age with some holes and fraying, it remains a wonderful example of early 20th Century Navajo J.B. Moore Crystal weaving. The rug measures 34" x 50".
