This is a beautiful gunstock war club with spontoon blade from the Eastern Plains having a nice old age. The club is hand-carved from one piece of wood and is adorned with scratch carving, incised lines carved into the body, chip carving at the top and brass covered metal tack designs. There is a notch-cut forged iron spontoon pattern trade blade inset into the top of the haft. The spontoon lance blade has a median ridge that runs down the center of both sides of the blade. There is minor wear on the club including various scratches and chips which expose a darker old wood. The club has a deep brown patina. The piece was previously noted by the collector as being attributed to the Miniconjou or Santee Sioux of the Eastern Plains. Provenance: Ex-collection of Dale Harrison. The club appears to be an old example with nice form having later added tacking, exact age unknown. Measures 26-1/2 inches in length. Blade measures 4-1/2 inches in length.
