Presented in this lot are Edison Amberol Wax Cylinder Records, fifty-two (52), circa 1910 to 1929. Included are Blue Amberol records, Blue Amberol Special records, a 1917 Orange label Blue Amberol Record, and two (2) 1910 Flat Top Blue Amberol records. In 1908, Edison introduced the wax Amberol cylinder, boasting double the number of grooves on an equivalently sized wax cylinder and hence a playing time twice as long as that of the Gold-Moulded cylinder. In the coming decade, the four-minute, 200 TPI (threads-per-inch) cylinder would replace the previous industry standard of two-minute, 100 TPI cylinders. Although this new groove pitch allowed for a wider range of musical and expressive potential, it seems that many of the songs, marches, and vaudeville skits of the earlier cylinder era were simply given a facelift—a new verse here, a verbal or non-musical interlude there—in order to meet the longer time requirements of the new cylinder medium. These were initially introduced for free during "promotions" to entice buyers to get their friends to buy an Edison Phonograph. The Edison Special Amberol Four Minute records were updated versions of previously released two-minute records. Round cylinder packages are in fair to good conditions, surface wear and age tanning noted, some tops and or bottoms missing. Each round cylinder package measures approximately 2.25" diameter x 4.5"H, approximate collective weight 14 lb, 2oz.
