Featured in this lot is an original, circa 1925 photograph photogravure on tissue by Edward Sheriff Curtis (American 1868-1952) titled “In San Ildefonso”. The piece is from etching photogravure Plate 589 by Edward S. Curtis of a San Ildefonso Pueblo, showing three men; it was published from Suffolk Engraving Co. in 1925. The title is shown in the bottom left-hand corner of the photograph and the plate number is in the top left hand corner. Edward Sheriff Curtis was an American photographer and ethnologist whose work focused on the American West and on Native American Peoples. Pictured in “The North American Indian” by Edward S. Curtis in Twenty Two Volumes, the first published in 1907; shown in Volume XVII published 1926 (referenced to Edward S. Curtis, The North American Indian: The Complete Portfolios, published 1997 in Italy Benedikt Taschen Verlag GmbH on page 654). Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. The condition of this framed photograph is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this framed photograph are 22 3/4" x 26 1/2" and the visible art measures 12 1/2" x 16 3/4". Truly a scarcely seen authentic original.
