Featured in this lot is this 1940s embossed tin and cardboard Alta Crest certified milk sign. In 1907, Alta Crest was founded based on an ancient family tradition. Joe Machado, the great-great grandfather of the Gragg family, fled Portugal as a cattle ship stowaway, traveled across the Atlantic to San Francisco, and finally made his home in Lafayette, California. Joe went to work on the undulating green hills of Lafayette, where our citrus orchards now stand, and began dairy farming, the only trade he had ever known. Joe inhabited an 800 square foot home with his wife and eight kids; the boys slept in the barn. The family milked the cows at the break of dawn, bottled the milk, and delivered it to the doorsteps of homesteaders in the rural Contra Costa region. In the late 1940's Dr. Hamlin purchased the property, and so the nostalgic chapter of Alta Crest Dairy gave way to the development of Silver Springs and Lafayette Woodlands. The sign is constructed of embossed tin and cardboard and shows an orange, black and silver color scheme. The sign reads, "Ask For!! Alta Crest Certified Milk / Always Better - All Ways" in black lettering and shows an image of three cows on the left. The back has flaps that can be extended to set the sign up. The sign shows good condition overall with some slight wear present, but no signs of obvious damage is present. The sign measures 6 5/16" L x 11 5/16" W.
