For your consideration is an Eskimo (Iniut or Yupik) Carved Scrimshaw Musk Ox Jawbone Cribbage Board, circa 1890s. Provenance: Walter Waters, The Bear Totem Store, Wrangell, Alaska. The Bear Totem Shop in Wrangell, Alaska was operated by Walter Charles Waters (1874-1943) and featured Alaska native art. This was one of many emporiums that sold Northwest Coast objects to visitors in the region, as well as to museums and collectors. New England whalers introduced scrimshaw to the northern Eskimos in the early 19th century. Today the art form is very popular among Alaskan artists. This musk ox jawbone scrimshaw cribbage board depicts whaling ships, Eskimos paddling a canoe, humans on a dogsled, hunting, processing meat, and many animals including caribou, foxes, grey wolf, whale, sealions and walruses. All the molars appear intact. This musk ox jawbone scrimshaw cribbage board is in nice condition. The images display intricate detailing with some slight fading exhibited. Measures 4.25"W x 14"L, weight is 1lb, 4oz.
