The lot features an exceptional Haida Northwest Coast Indian Raven totem carved Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Special Ordered One of One Tip-Up Break-Down .44 Cal Smokeless Rifle / Shotgun in a custom leather antique case; ex-Museum collection. The wood stock and foregrip have been artfully carved by an early 1900’s Haida Northwest Coast artist showing a Raven totemic pattern head with abalone shell inlays and further a dimensionally carved Haida Frog totem at the bottom of the stock. The carving completely surrounds and covers the wood, being on both sides as well as the top and bottom of both the stock and foregrip. The foregrip shows a further Raven and Frog totem carving with abalone shell inlay throughout. The Raven in Haida mythology is a central character and is commonly described as the “trickster”, but the Haida believe Raven, or Yaahl to be a complex reflection of one’s own self. Raven can be a magician, a transformer, a potent creative force, ravenous debaucher but always a cultural hero. He is responsible for creating Haida Gwaii, releasing the sun from its tiny box and making the stars and moon. The long gun is marked, “J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.” on the left and, “TRADE MARK STEVENS REG. U.S. PAT. OFF & FGN.” On the bottom “E 307.” The barrel is marked “44-SHOT”. This is in a custom Antique Leather rifle / shotgun case with custom spot of the gun along with custom made signs. This appears to have been on display in a Museum collection. This is a takedown shotgun / rifle chambered in .44 SHOT smokeless powder. The lot also includes an original 50 Central Fire Premium Quality Ultramax Ammunition Smokeless Cartridges Single Action Made in the U.S.A. Double Action Rapid City, South Dakota antique-style box (empty). Haida carved firearms are exceedingly rare, for reference see the Winchester 1894 Haida Indian Carved Rifle sold by our company in 2017 for $5,700, and the percussion rifle and pistol set also sold by our company in 2022 for a total of $7,250. The signs in the case mark this firearm as a Stevens Arms and Tool Co. 1914 Featherweight No. 101 Special Ordered One of One Tip-Up Break-Down Shotgun Cal. .44 with a heavy 26-inche round shotgun barrel, noted previously as being .44 and .44 shot. Curio and Relic Firearm requires FLL, Curio and Relic or FFL transfer. Serial Number E 307. The foregrip has a crack repaired. The gun appears to function and the entire piece shows wear and patina consistent with its 100-year old age. Case measures overall 31.75-inches by 11-inches by 3.25-inches.
