Featured in this lot is this original, silver gelatin photo of John Little Crow taken September 28th, 1950, taken by Frank B. Fiske (1883-1952), from the ex-collection of the C.M. Russell Museum and John Kleinschmidt. Frank Bennett Fiske was an early photographer born at Fort Bennett in the Dakota Territory, spending most of his life in the Fort Yates area. He was best known for his rich, detailed portraits of Native American Indians, for which he won the North Dakota Art Award in 1950. He learned the trade from S.T. Fansler, post studio photographer, and remained in Fort Yates to document the town, the Standing Rock Agency, and the changing ways of the frontier. The photo shows John Little Crow posing for a photo in front of a teepee, as a buffalo skull leans on his leg and he holds feathers in his left hand and a beaded, rawhide bag in his right hand. It is signed on the left hand side reading, "John Little Crow Sept. 28, 1950". It features two museum tags from the C.M Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana with the first reading, "1396-87 O'Dell" and the second reading, "John Little Crow". It shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of damage noted. The visible photo measures 9 1/4" L x 7 1/4" W, while the entire piece measures 10 1/4" L x 8 1/4" W x 5/8" D. It weighs 12 ounces.
Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit.
