Presented in this lot is a First Edition of "Life of General Grant" by James Penny Boyd, 1885, P. W. Ziegler & Co. Philadelphia and Chicago publisher. “Military and Civil Life of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant” by Boyd offers an extensive and illustrative exploration of Grant's life, highlighting his military prowess, presidential tenure, and lasting impact on the American people. The book is profusely illustrated with 175 engravings, providing visual insight into key military figures, battle scenes, and moments from Grant's presidency. Written in memoriam following Grant's death, Boyd articulates his admiration for Grant, emphasizing his exceptional military skill, his role as a unifying figure in a time of national strife, and his ability to transform former adversaries into allies. Boyd also presents Grant as a paragon of strength and reconciliation, whose victories in battle were crucial not just for their immediate impact, but for their lasting contribution to national unity and peace. Lastly, the author also touches upon Grant's post-presidential life, portraying him as a revered figure, admired by both friends and former foes, and highlights the universal sense of loss felt at his passing. James P. Boyd (1836-1910) was a historical writer primarily known for his works focusing on Native American history, particularly the period of the Indian Wars.
