Featured in this lot are these gauntlet gloves attributed to being from Fort Keogh, founded by Colonel Nelson A. Miles. The set shows hair-on-hide, mitten-shaped gloves with an integral wrist gauntlet showing tanned leather palms and dark green, corduroy cloth lining. Fort Keogh is a former US Army post located at the western edge of modern-day Miles City, Montana on the banks of the Yellowstone River and was in use from circa 1876-1924. Nelson A. Miles founded the post in 1876, in the wake of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, as a base to patrol the Cheyenne and Sioux American Indians, originally known as the Tongue River Cantonment. Two years later, it moved one mile west and was renamed Fort Keogh in honor of Captain Myles Keogh, who was killed at the Little Bighorn. The gloves are said to date to circa 1876-1924, originate from the Fort, and were worn during the harsh winters by an Army enlisted Fort member. The overall condition of this pair of bear gauntlet gloves is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this gauntlet gloves are 14" x 9 1/2" x 1 1/2".
