Featured in this lot is this Otto F. Ernst Sheridan, Wyo. saddle bags, circa 1900's. The saddle bags show fantastic construction, with the two bags buck stitched together and the face of the leather tooled with a zig zagging border. In Louisville, Kentucky 1872, Otto Ernst was born, and as a young man he learned the art of saddle making at the Dodgion Saddlery in Wamego, KS. In 1900, Otto Ernst and his family moved to Sheridan, Wyoming. Over the next couple of years, he did various types of work, including saddle making, working for George Parmeter. By 1902, Otto Ernst partnered with John Buckley and the two men opened the Ernst - Buckley Saddlery. The saddlery thrived until 1907, when the Ernst & Buckley Saddlery ended with Otto Ernst buying out John Buckley due to a disagreement between the two former partners. The overall condition of these saddle bags is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of these saddle bags are 14" x 8 1/4" x 2 1/2".
