Featured in this lot is this original Fred Cleveland (1943-2021) painting of a Native American woman painted late 20th / early 21st century. Fred Cleveland was born in a traditional hogan on the Navajo Nation near Ganada, Arizona. His parents were also craftspeople, with his father sandpainting and his mother weaving. When his mother taught her techniques at the then Arizona State College, now Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, she brought her small son with her because hiring a babysitter was not economically possible at the time. And while her pupils shared their classroom equipment with him to delight the tiny boy, the seeds of a young craftsman were planted. He painted murals while attending boarding school and continued to do so while serving in the United States Army in Germany. Following his military duty, he studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Cleveland perfected his craft as an illustrator. He has garnered various awards, honors, and accolades during the course of his career. This painting shows a Native American woman performing a possible traditional dance in traditional clothing as she holds two sticks or feathers in each hand. She wears colors of gray, black, white, green, blue and red throughout her outfit. It is set in a wood frame and signed in the bottom left hand corner reading, "Cleveland" in black paint. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present on the frame and artwork. The visible art measures 6 5/8" L x 4 1/2" W, while the entire piece measures 10" L x 8" W x 1 1/4" D. It has a total weight of 8 ounces.
