This is an original photograph of Crow Butte Nebraska done in the late 19th Century by Trager & Kuhn Chadron, Nebraska. George E. Trager (1861-1948) was born in Germany in 1861 and arrived in America in 1876. He started his first photography in 1888 with Frederick Kuhn in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. The next year, 1889, they moved to Chadron, Nebraska and purchased the Bon Ton Art Gallery from Alice Luce. George Trager was the first photographer at the Wounded Knee Massacre. This piece is marked in the negative, “Crow Butte Neb South East View” showing the beautiful Butte on a large format photograph on a boudoir card. The back is marked as Trager & Kuhn, Photographic and Scenic Artists Chadron, Nebraska and written on Crow Butte Neb. South East View #1695 NEB. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 8.5” x 5.25”. Image is beautiful, some wear, corners worn on card, small hole at the top, but overall fair.
